Conservative Dentistry
What is conservative dentistry?
Conservative and restorative dentistry allows us to prevent, stop and cure dental caries in all its stages. Dental caries can slightly affect the tooth structure, destroying only the enamel, or progress to more serious stages, invading deeper tissues such as dentine or dental pulp.
The treatment of dental caries is based on the removal of the infected tissue and the subsequent reconstruction of the lost tissue with biocompatible materials such as composite resins. This is what used to be popularly known as dental fillings and what we now call dental fillings. A successful result is achieved by carrying out all the appropriate procedures with the best materials and an excellent rehabilitation of the anatomy of the teeth that require it.
Today, restorative dentistry encompasses an array of possibilities in terms of technique and restorative materials. The old amalgam restorations have lost popularity in favour of other materials that are easier to handle, with better physico-chemical properties and better functional and aesthetic results.
FAQ's about conservative dentistry
Oral hygiene, consisting of proper toothbrushing technique, is necessary to prevent caries. This should be complemented by flossing once a day and rinsing with fluoride or other antiseptics if necessary.
It is also important to have your teeth thoroughly cleaned in the clinic at least once a year and to have regular check-ups.
Nor should we forget to eat a healthy, balanced diet, avoiding sticky foods and sugary drinks.
Dental fluoridation is a painless procedure that consists of applying fluoride to the tooth surface, giving the enamel extra protection against acids and thus preventing the appearance of caries. We recommend it for children and patients with a high predisposition to dental caries, patients undergoing orthodontic treatment and patients with dental malformations.
